Lefkada is the only one of the Ionian Islands that is reachable by car, as it is connected to the mainland via a causeway and a floating bridge.
The island has gained a worldwide reputation due to its unique beaches of breathtaking wild beauty. Nature has created an imposing combination of sheer cliffs, pine trees, white sand and turquoise water. Some of the most renowned beaches are Kathisma, Porto Katsiki and Egremni that enchant visitors at first glance.
Lefkada displays a great diversity, as apart from its impressive coastline it has mountainous territories that comprise important habitats of rare species of plants, birds and mammals. In the inner of the island one can find caves, gorges, waterfalls and springs. Also, the historic monastery of Faneromeni, offers a great view to the city of Lefkada.
From the seaside village of Nydri, small ferryboats link Lefkada to Meganissi, the secret paradise of the Mediterranean that is accessible only via Lefkada. Meganissi is a tiny island where the time seems to have stopped. Tranquility embraces one from the first step on the waterfront of the island, while pebbly and sandy beaches along with the wooded environment create a unique landscape of relaxation. Additionally, on the island one can find the sea cave where the submarine Papanikolis was hiding during the World War II.
Also from Nydri daily cruises are offered to the area off the private island of Scorpios, the famous island of Aristotle Onassis that is now owned by the Russian businessman Dmitry Yevgenyevich Rybolovlev.
